I?TALA
"I have been a painter since the age of six and a poet since my middle thirties. My work started out realistic but became increasingly abstract. Lately I have incorporated my poems on the surface of the canvas using hand made paper and therefore the words become images. Lyricism is the nature of the way I paint.
I have had many one person shows and I have been published in many scholarly essays including several additions of the American Art Collector. I am skilled in painting fruits, trees, Venetian walls, and the waters of the languid lagoon that surrounds my beloved Venezia, where I grew up and studied art. Having lived and painted in Chicago for more than forty years, I lovingly indulged in also depicting Lake Michigan in many of its ever-changing moods. " See more here.
"I believe that a good photograph should first provoke a moment of faint surprise—'I have never seen an image just like that'—followed by a contrary feeling of familiarity—'Of course, that is an image of our natural world.'I seek, not conventionally pretty pictures, but novel patterns of light and color. Also, in a culture saturated with distractions, I find peace in slowing down to appreciate the beauties of nature. For this show, I found beauty both in landscapes and floral closeups.
Unlike many photographers, I do a minimum of digital editing. I never Photoshop. What you see is what I saw and selected through the lens.As a retired journalist and nonfiction author, I found that photography, formerly a hobby, became a passion. Then I discovered a new passion, writing fiction. My first novel, Stumbling in the Public Square, was published in January. You can read the first chapter on my website, www.jameslmerriner.com. The beautiful cover of course was designed by Itala."
