Chicago Philharmonic presents Defying Destiny
Journey with the Chicago Philharmonic through triumph and tragedy as we follow great heroes in defiance of their fate.
Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterpiece Scheherazade honors the story of a brave sultana as she spins colorful tales for 1001 nights to protect herself and others from a jaded sultan. This work, inspired by the Middle Eastern folk tale Arabian Nights, provides the audiences a powerful and emotive snapshot of four of the heroine’s many stories. Joining the Chicago Philharmonic for this magical suite is Concertmaster David Perry, weaving his own stunning violin solos throughout the piece.
Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet evokes another timeless story with magnificent highs and a heartbreaking finale. The work expertly captures moments of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers who rebel against their warring families with devastating results. Don’t miss this chance to hear the most iconic “love” melody of all time, played live by a full orchestra!
Also joining the Chicago Philharmonic is “most outstanding performer” (Chicago Tribune) and timpanist Robert Everson, performing the boundary-breaking Raise the Roof concerto for timpani and orchestra. Witness Chicago Philharmonic’s own take on this “joyous romp” (South Florida Classical Review) that defies tradition with unorthodox performance techniques.
